3ds Max: Weighing vertices by hand

When i add bones, i attach them using skin then sub-object to sort out the vertices on the mesh. Now im not very knowledgable with the terimology here, sorry :)

Is Weighing vertices by hand setting the colours like red / blue / green etc of the vertices? So the specific vertice is attached to the bone by a certain weight. Red being the strongest im assuming ?

Is this correct. If so could someone point me in the right direction to a page in the manual (ive got R3) where this is explained please. How to manualy weigh vertices. Or could some kind soul explain it better.

I dont really know where to look in the manual.

Im at a loss really :)
