Mesh industry requirements

Hey all,

So im looking at building my folio. My main concern is not knowing the industry requirements. Im sure they vary from project to project but what i'd like to know is about mesh and textures. When I studied they made me do 1 mesh and 2 textures (head and body) Is this the case in the game industry? Or is it really based on style and preference from artist to art?
If I make a character with heaps of armour, how should I go about modeling? Piece by piece or one solid mesh?
please help!

It depends on the game and whether in game you would swap out outfits, heads etc, you would probably keep the bits that are changeable separate with there own textures, but obviously keeping to a minimal amount of objects and textures as you can.
