3d Library

I would like to create some application where one can virtually walk through some large library building (with many stores) by using the wasd keys. Each shelf contains virtual books and cd-rom/dvd's with text on it where touching a book will show the contents.

What development environment and what tools do I need?

All hints and tips are welcome,

I am a novice when it comes to this sort of thing, but here are my thoughts:

You'll need to create your assets in a 3D modeling program, such as Maya or Blender. Your assets are your characters, environments, furniture, etc.

Once you've created your aesthetics, you can import them into a game making engine, like Unity 3D, and design the interactive aspects of the game (walking in the library and clicking on books) until you've made a finished product. Unity is probably a good starting point because its easy to learn and fairly intuitive. Keep in mind, this will take a lot of time and effort if you do it by yourself. Good luck!
