modifier list problem

I am facing a peculiar problem. Whenever I click modifier list, max stops working and it simply hangs. I can access the modifiers through modifier menu but max hangs again if I want to open subdivision surface modifiers. I am using max 2009 and 2011 and facing the same problem with both.
Can anybody help me. I have downloaded and installed the latest service pack as well as hotfix but the problem is still there.
