An unskilled user looking for some pointers

Well I'm Greg and I'm not very good with 3DS Max.My first "real" personal project after reading a few tutorials and fiddling with the a few of the tools was a ship but it turned out to be alittle too ambitious. For a time I stopped because I knew I wasn't doing it "right",I was simply moving the vertices. After seeing another beginner ask for help with his work I noticed that what he had done looked far better than anything I ever did and his wasn't even done.As such I have decided to try something simpler and more importantly seek help more directly, anything bits of information you guys can give while I look over the various tutorials here would be greatly appreciated.I suppose my first question is how that guide made that model?

1. Observe the object you are modeling.
2. Do a simple line drawing on sketch paper of that object.
3. Seperate the object by shapes, square, rectangle, circle (sphere), etc.
4. DO NOT unibody everything
5. Low Poly modeling is the best way to start something. Add details later.

after detailing you may want to UV wrap it to make some nice textures.
To me this is the most important thing because i think it gives the most detail..
especially with objects or vehicles
