But seriously, what kind of texturing are you talking about? Be more specific please. For normal maps for example Mudbox or Zbrush is necessary. For preparing textures Photoshop or Gimp and so on.

Photoshop, Gimp, like previously stated the best software really is the one you know how to use. Download a editing suite, get in play and learn through doing. It's the only way that I have ever been able to learn it.
