Job details: Technical & Level Design Instructor Vancouver Film Schools Game Design Program, an emerging leader in the delivery of production-based education, is an important stepping stone for those seeking to join the game design profession. With courses in game theory, animation, cinematics, technical design and production methodology, the VFS Game Design Program has been built in close consultation with industry to ensure that our graduates will be their future stars.

In keeping with the schools policy of employing dynamic professionals on the cutting edge of industry, the Game Design Program is seeking submissions of interest for the full-time position of Technical & Level Design Instructor. This highly rewarding appointment is ideal for an experienced professional looking for a change of pace from the intense demands of the industry. As a member of the schools core staff, you will share your knowledge in a creative learning environment, helping to guide the next generation of game design professionals.

Ideally, we are seeking a candidate whose broad skills in technical game development will complement our existing team. Our need is for someone with a deep knowledge of the technical aspects of code, mechanics and modules, level design editors, commercial game editors (including level modding), and possessing particular experience with games scripting languages such as Lua and Python, and how they relate to game design and implementation. The successful candidate for this post will establish and teach curriculum in technical design, game mechanics, scripting, and level modding, to a stage where students are comfortable working with such tools and languages, so that they may go on to use these skills in their future courses and projects, placing them in a more advantageous position upon graduation.

Core Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the Head of Department and will be responsible for delivering curriculum effectively and providing feedback to students. Specific duties include:

Working from a course syllabus, develop lesson plans detailing what will be taught and how the course material will be delivered.
In consultation with other staff, develop innovative mechanisms to teach technical design techniques.
Work closely with the Head of Department to ensure class curriculum is accurate, up-to-date and communicated to students in a clear and concise manner.
The candidate must appreciate, display and promote the collaborative nature of the game production environment.
Instruct students on the basics of object oriented programming (C++) and programmer terminology.
Instruct students on the various technical problems encountered during game production.
Instruct students on the scripting languages and processes most commonly used in game production.
Instruct students on the essential game mechanics that comprise most popular games.
Instruct students in the use of level design editors and commercial game editors.
Provide students with guidance in issues relating to the technical implementation of games.
Mentor students through the various snags encountered in a scripting process.
Mentor students working on Portfolio and Industry projects.
Provide students with regular feedback.

Job Qualifications:

Relevant degree/diploma or equivalent work experience in an appropriate technically driven discipline.
Demonstrable familiarity and experience with game scripting and implementation.
Demonstrable familiarity and experience with level editors and game editors.
A minimum of one accredited published game title, or 2 years of industry experience in an appropriate area of game development.
Experience working with and teaching students is advantageous.
Ability to lead workshops, lectures and seminars.
Excellent communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
A good sense of humor.
