Funnily enough a former student of mine storyboarded a similar idea (long time ago), and he ended up at Aardman, then went on to senior staff at Dreamworks

There's Odeon, which is pretty high end and isn't cheap at $5K for a seat. There is a free trial though.

Or CARA from Rhintek which I believe includes some simple 3d modelling and is much cheaper ...

Got to agree.
I'm using Max right now, but I prefer Maya for animation. The weird thing is, I couldn't necessarily give a list of reasons as to why, one feature as against another.
