I have been having difficulties with trying to create particles to give the effect of dirt flying into the air during an explosion, this is mostly due to the fact that I don't have very much experience using particles. Does anybody know about any good tutorials on the web or just give me some quick tips for pulling off the effect?

What exactly is your problem?
The particles do not look like dirt or they do not move like dirt?
What software are you using btw?
Please include the software you use in the subject of your topic.

The look... hm.. during an explosion the particles will move very fast so for realistic looking explosion you need to apply a lot of motion blur to your particles.
Then almost every particle will look like dirt, unless it is pink of course. Wink
