It looks like your UVs have some mirrored portions, i.e. the normals are facing in the opposite directions. Mudbox can not handle such UVs properly.?????????

You can use various UV projection planes and bake the texture to an unwrapped UV channel.
Or you can use mudbox which has stencils projection and paint just the elements you need.

yea, mudbox you can do this in for sure. It has a human base model you can start with and you can pose in there as well. Not as advanced as Zbrush, but it will do the job

First check what the hell is actually going on with this map. Use Unwrap UVW and Edit map to see how does it behave. I suppose that in mudbox everything looks fine.

I would suggest Maya, it has a great character modeling capabilities. ZBrush and Mudbox are good if you know how to sculpt, but Maya is good to model using traditional tools like nurbs.

Your best bet would have to be Mudbox. The learning curve is easier than Zbrush and the price isn't that bad considering what you get.

modo 3d is easy to use and mudbox is very easy to use.
I remember I was learning 3d studio 4.0 for dos when I was 15 Very Happy
It was a really great experience.

I think subdivision surfaces like NURMS are the future of 3d modeling..
Polygonal models can be finished in programs like zbrush and mudbox.
