yea, mudbox you can do this in for sure. It has a human base model you can start with and you can pose in there as well. Not as advanced as Zbrush, but it will do the job

I would suggest Maya, it has a great character modeling capabilities. ZBrush and Mudbox are good if you know how to sculpt, but Maya is good to model using traditional tools like nurbs.

Blender is free and yes a pretty good start. The interfaces still baffles me.
