What is the definition of a segment in terms of 3D Modeling?

What is the concept behind being able to select how many segments an object has? In reference to GMAX, you can select how many segments there are, how do you know how many segments to have when you are creating objects to be used in video games?

Thanks much!

I believe the number of segments is the number of edges - lines between 2 points that the object consists of.
To see the number of edges press the mouse right click button on an object and select properties - that's if I remember it correctly.
Let me know if it helps you.
