If you're just buing a machine - take as much RAM as you can. There is never too much RAM

For 3DS Max, I would suggest minimum 8GB. And Baalnazzar is right you can never have too much really, but you really don't need to exceed 16GB.
Make sure you have a good video card, 1GB or more.

What operating system limitation on the maximum amount of memory? In Windows XP 3GB install more useless.

You need min 3 gb for 3dsmax, i test the performence, with 2gb its not good!
