It has baked in Ambient Occlusion (AO), however the shadows that you see (around the fire extinghuisher for example) can be real time.

I Agree, however this was created for a game background and they wanted the lighting fairly flat so that they could do something clever with the lighting inside the engine.

I have had this before, I think it was something to do with the viewport settings (around the lighting and shadows options)
Also have you tried welding the Vertices? and resetting the smoothing group ...

Your advertising logos, on the tall building give it away, also the green colour of the foreground objects doesn't quite fit, not sure how, maybe too bright, but very good nonetheless

Do you have cameras in your scene? If so it is fairly easy to set all the images rendering in Max automatically.
