In need of help defining the term "tapering"

I have an assignment where one of the questions is to define "tapering", which I am having troubles with due to our course litterature not containing any information on it and every page on internet mainly saying the same thing.

What I've got so far is that tapering is a technique similar to scaling, but is a non-linear transformation, where an object is deformed so that it gradually gets narrower toward a point.

The assignment states that the answer must be extensive, so if you have anything to fill in or correct me on, feel free!

Thanks on behalf,
