is it posible in max to make an object invisible but leaving it's shadows still visible?
-would be ok if this only occurs in the render

are you talking about before a render? or render out the shadow layer?
you should be able to render difference passes, but not sure how to do that in max

what I want is a rendered image with the shadows of a non-rendered object

right so you should be able to render a shadow pass
and it will render all the shadows without the objects

just assign the shadow/matte material to the object you just want a shadow from
